HÖLJES, Sweden (July 6, 2015) – Olsbergs MSE Ford extended its lead in the teams’ championship at Sweden’s “Magic Weekend” in Höljes, with Andreas Bakkerud scoring a podium and teammate Reinis Nitiss earning a fifth-place result.
“I’m pleased with myself. It’s my third time in a row on the podium here in Sweden and it feels really great,” said Bakkerud, exuberant after the champagne ceremony.
The World RX of Sweden is a fan favorite stop in the FIA World Rallycross Championship. Dubbed the “Magic Weekend,” a week-long rallycross party attracts a record crowd of nearly 40,000 fans from across Europe to the deep forest of Värmland, near the Norwegian border. Many of Bakkerud’s typically vocal, flag-waving Norwegian supporters made the trip to see him race this weekend.
The Holjes track features 40 percent dirt, elevation changes and one of the biggest jumps on the World RX circuit. “It’s a proper rallycross track,” said Nitiss. “Everybody loves it — it’s so fast.”
After a strong start to the weekend, Bakkerud put his Ford Fiesta ST on pole for the final, while Nitiss lined up in the second row.
In the final, Bakkerud took the holeshot and led until a mechanical issue triggered the engine into safety mode on the fourth lap and dropped him back in the order. From there, he held firm to cross the line in third and score his first podium of the season.
Nitiss, meanwhile, found himself fighting for control after a tire began to lose air early in the race. He drove conservatively to cross the line in fifth. “At that point, the main thing was finishing,” he said.
Timur Timerzyanov advanced to semifinal round, but missed the cut for the final. The Russian is racing the Red Bull/Viatti Ford Fiesta ST with Olsbergs MSE as an independent in the driver’s championship this season.
After Round 6, Olsbergs MSE continues to lead the teams championship, while Andreas Bakkerud remains third in the driver’s points — trailing Johan Kristoffersson and leader Petter Solberg. Nitiss is fifth.
Some 35 Supercars were entered in the World RX of Sweden. In addition, 15 Olsbergs MSE-built RX Lites returned for their third race of the season.
Olsbergs MSE Lites driver Kevin Eriksson earned a third-place result, and is now a close second in the championship points. His teammate, Sandra Hultgren, earned a fourth-place result in the semifinal round and did not advance to the final.
The Ford OSME team also competed in the United States this weekend, with Red Bull Global Rallycross drivers Joni Wiman and Sebastain Eriksson setting a fast pace in their Red Bull / Bluebeam Ford Fiesta ST rallycross cars in North Carolina at the Marine Corps Air Station New River.
Next, the World Rallycross Championship squad of Nitiss and Bakkerud will travel to Trois Rivieres for the World RX of Canada, August 7. Before then, Ford OSME teammates Eriksson and Wiman return to Red Bull Global Rallycross competition for a doubleheader weekend in Detroit, July 25-26.
