Double podium for Olsbergs MSE in GRC doubleheader

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (September 22, 2014) — The Olsbergs MSE team scored a pair of Red Bull Global Rallycross podiums in the Los Angeles doubleheader this weekend, with second- and third-place results bringing the championship title closer for Red Bull/Bluebeam Ford Fiesta ST driver Joni Wiman.

“It’s really looking positive now after two podiums in a row and confidence is pretty high,” said the 20-year-old Wiman. “Both Olsbergs MSE Ford Fiesta ST Supercars are in one piece after back-to-back races and now we can focus on setup for next weekend’s race, instead of repairs from this one.”

The rookie Wiman climbed two positions in the championship standings. With just two races remaining in the season, Wiman is now a close second in the overall title chase — behind fellow Ford driver Ken Block.

Kobalt Tools Ford Fiesta ST driver Patrik Sandell also had a strong showing in Los Angeles and is in the top five heading into the championship’s penultimate round near Seattle in just five days. Sandell said he is thrilled the next race is expected to feature a high percentage of gravel and dirt.

“I am so looking forward to getting back onto the dirt,” said Sandell, who has over 50 World Rally Championship starts in his career and is very comfortable racing on slick surfaces. “I hope it will be raining and slippery. I want to be sideways from the start through the finish line so that I see this entire race from the side window.”

The Olsbergs MSE team is favored for success as the series returns to the grounds of the DirtFish Rally school for the first time since 2011. The squad earned a pair of rallycross podiums the last time the series visited the venue — including a third-place finish with team owner Andreas Eriksson behind the wheel of an Olsbergs MSE Ford Fiesta.

This weekend’s Los Angeles doubleheader took place on an unusual temporary circuit at the Port of Los Angeles, overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

Wiman finished third on Sunday following a second-place result a day earlier. The top results helped Olsbergs MSE partner Ford to clinch the Red Bull Global Rallycross Championship’s manufacturers title before the conclusion of the season. It is Ford’s fourth-consecutive championship win.

In addition to the Supercars contests, GRC Lites returned to the series this weekend for their sixth and seventh rounds of 2014 competition. Olsbergs MSE driver Kevin Eriksson battled hard with teammate Mitchell DeJong all weekend and scored his second win of the GRC season on Saturday — with DeJong finishing close behind him, in second. Both drivers returned to the podium on Sunday with DeJong earning victory and Eriksson taking second place.

Red Bull Global Rallycross Championship competition resumes with the ninth round of the 2014 season, GRC Seattle, September 26-27. Full coverage of the race will air on NBC Sunday, September 28 at 4:30 p.m. (Eastern Time).
